Ortmann family papers, 1874-ca. 1900.

Volume 1 (ca. 1900) contains recipes in German and English for cakes, cookies, breads, and other goods collected by an unknown member of the Ortmann family. Volumes 2 and 3 are the autograph books (1877-1883 and 1888-1898) of Evelyn C. Sweeny. An inscription indicates the books were given to Sweeny by her mother in 1877 and 1888. The autographs, many accompanied by poems, are from Sweeny's friends from Charleston (S.C.), Graniteville (S.C.), Early Branch (S.C.), Summerville (N.Y.), and Ireland. One inscription is in Armenian, another in Chinese. Annotations added at a later date, probably by Sweeny, contain additional information about the signers. Also includes drawings and colored prints which have been pasted in the volume. Volume 4 is the receipt book (1874-1882) of F.J. Ortmann (1839-1899), a blacksmith and dealer in stoves, containing receipts endorsed by various individuals and business in Charleston (S.C.). These include Cameron, Barkley & Co., John J. Delany, C.D. Franke, Hart & Co., Sweegan & Co., C. Werner, and J. Werner. Many entries read paid in full or on account, others are for coal, awning frames, a marble sill, old iron, pants and a vest, advertising in The New Era (1881), and granite brace blocks.
